Working Hand in Hand, Not One or the Other
This week’s lectures were very surprising in my opinion. As we compared the role of architecture between the interior and the exterior, I began to wonder why the drastic stance was important. Its hard for me to imagine the approach to architecture being determined by one space or value. We looked at examples of solely exterior façade designs and architects giving up the programmatic elements that could emphasis the exterior and we saw architects focus solely on the interior programming and giving way to whatever the exterior is with no fight. I can’t grasp the idea of designing one without the other and knowing that architects (past or present) look to this type of architectural theory is beyond my understanding. I feel like Switzerland because there is no way I can pick a side if asked. Logically, the value of interior and exterior architecture work hand in hand, there is no this or that.
