We all love swimming pools

Tactical Urbanism is an approach to urban design that emphasizes the use of low-cost, temporary interventions to improve the function and livability of public spaces. This approach has gained popularity in recent years due to its numerous benefits, both for individuals and communities as a whole.

One of the primary benefits of Tactical Urbanism is its ability to improve the safety and accessibility of public spaces. By creating temporary bike lanes, parklets, and crosswalks, cities can test out new designs and configurations before committing to more permanent changes. These interventions can also be used to address safety concerns in areas with high rates of pedestrian or bicycle accidents, creating safer and more inviting spaces for all.

Another benefit of Tactical Urbanism is its ability to promote community engagement and ownership of public spaces. When community members are involved in the design and implementation of temporary interventions, they feel a sense of ownership and investment in the space. This can lead to increased community involvement in the upkeep and maintenance of public spaces, resulting in a more vibrant and active community.

An excellent example of Tactical Urbanism in action is the Pop-Up Pool project in Philadelphia. This project transformed an empty lot into a public swimming pool, complete with seating areas, shade structures, and a concession stand. The pool was only open for one summer season, but it had a significant impact on the surrounding community. It provided a much-needed recreational space in an area with limited public amenities, and brought together community members of all ages and backgrounds.

In conclusion, Tactical Urbanism is a valuable approach to urban design that provides numerous benefits to individuals and communities. By using low-cost, temporary interventions, cities can test out new designs and configurations, improve safety and accessibility, and promote community engagement and ownership of public spaces. The Pop-Up Pool project in Philadelphia is just one example of the transformative power of Tactical Urbanism.

  1. Idea like this are so interesting! I think it is so interesting that the pop up are usually in control of the community. It brings the community together when some new is created that has a timeline. Everyone will be wanting to check it out before it is taken dow and is excited to see what comes next. Maybe architecture could be more like the fair.
