Faces in Places.
When a baby is born, we instinctively look at its face and often comment on how cute it is (although there are, of course, exceptions!). Similarly, when a crime is committed, officers will ask for a description of the suspect's appearance, focusing on their facial features. This demonstrates just how important faces are in our daily lives, and the same can be said for the exterior of buildings.
When we enter a building, the first thing we notice is the façade – the color, texture, material, orientation, and other visual features. They say that first impressions are the most important, and this is certainly true in architecture. The exterior envelope of a building is a vital part of its design, yet it is sometimes dismissed or given less attention than the interior spaces.
It is important to remember that every part of a building is significant, from the mechanical systems to the way the space makes us feel, the way the light interacts with the room, and especially the way the skin of the building feels. The façade is a crucial element that can make or break the success of a design.
Fortunately, advances in technology have made it easier to create façades that not only look great but also provide environmental benefits. Sustainable design is becoming increasingly important, and façades can play a significant role in achieving this. By considering the importance of the exterior envelope and using technology to our advantage, we can create buildings that are both visually striking and environmentally friendly.
