The Legacy of Sambo
Rural Studio elicits the good nature of us as humans. To give to those who are less fortunate than us while utilizing the skills we have developed as architects. The writings of Sambo and hearing him speak in interviews are so genuine that one can have little doubt in their mind of his honest desire to help people and how he figured out a way to do it through his profession. The academic achievements are secondary to the human benefit even though this program only seems to be fully feasible with the institutional backing of a large established University. In school we get caught up on ideas of redistributing wealth through government backed programs but compassion to other humans is what makes the rural studio great. With that foundation they are able to innovate architecture with the constraints of a low budget and ingenuity. Low budget, ingenuity, and compassion create amazing architecture.
Scurry,
ReplyDeleteI also found the goal of the rural studio radically different in the way that it focuses on compassion and giving back to those who can't necessarily afford it. It makes an important point about how everyone deserves to have access to good architecture which is diametrically opposite to the mindset cultivated in us that you must pay to access something good.
