Is Architecture Art?
In the reading by
Ellen Durham-Jones, architecture is described as the overlapping of business and
art. In an overall context, I feel that ‘art’ is not quite the right word. Art
feels like something someone makes a certain way because they wanted it to be
that way. Art could be the Junkspace that Koolhaas refers to, building without
context and changing the layers as one sees fit. I could also see art as how we
used to do architecture, when the well-known figures of today built what they
thought would look good. Today, especially in the professional setting,
architects do have a say, but also have to take into account what their client
wants, even if it isn’t necessarily a style or layout, they themselves would
like. As Professor Franco said in class, we are the generation of architects
that use social issues to mold our designs. Maybe a better description could be
business and creation?
