Architecture is NOT the solution.
We as architects look at architecture to solve many of life’s
problems, however sometimes we must understand that architecture has
limitations and no matter how hard we try architecture cannot solve all of
humanity’s problems. Urban sprawl is not as much a problem of architecture as
it is a problem of the human mind (and economics). Today we live in a culture
focused on consuming, getting what is best for us when we need it. As Americans
choose to spread towards the outskirts of cities in search of more land, a
slower pace to life, etc. the big box stores will follow. We live in an on
demand society where driving back into the city to get such commodities as food
and household items is simply not acceptable.
We want to be instantly pleased.
We want the best of everything,
the newest and fastest. Architecture will not
change that, there is no
building that we can design to stop consumerism.
