the price of knowledge for architects

In architecture school we are taught to always think critically. We look at projects as an ever evolving theorem that will eventually make us who we are when we enter the professional world. However, once we begin our careers we begin to restrict our thoughts and we lose that broad array of thought that we once had. In today world architecture keeps becoming more and more restrictive which only furthers the problem of funneling us down a path that makes us lose valuable thoughts and idea. We lose that voice in our heads that say we can change the world and make a difference, and in a way we lose ourselves. To me I think that this might be what takes a architect from good to great. That idea that they look beyond what is in front of them and create a greater understanding of the whole, but that does not mean that architects should solely carry the burden of trying to make society better. Michael Hopkins Stated that, "maybe architects shouldn't be in the position to make those kinds of decisions." As architects we are told we have to know a little about a broad range of subjects s odo we really posses the knowledge needed to make decisions relating to the economy or environment? I think there are many more people that are more qualified and more suited to help us make decisions that can better society and even the world if we just take the time to ask the questions and listen.
