What is our purpose? Our premise
As annoying as the beginning of the semester was, trying to formulate our premise to figure out who we are as designers, it makes a lot of sense now. Especially now that we are being interviewed for jobs. We have a real talking point to discuss about ourselves and our opinions to compare to whoever we might be working with for the next few years.
This is what Samuel Mockabee wants his students to figure out on their own. He believes that architects are servants to humanity and you just need to figure out as a designer HOW you are going to do that and WHY you want to.
The topic of scarcity and spatial justice has a lot to do with our purpose as architects. The profession is questioning its purpose and shifting its servitude from the glory of building for the bourgeoisie to the satisfaction of serving the poor and less fortunate. This way of thinking is repairing spatial injustice that is occurring all over the world.

Chelsea,
ReplyDeleteI agree that the premise was useful to develop, and it was interesting to see the different ideas that bubbled up. It will be fun to see if anyone continues to develop these ideas (with their current or with a new stance on architecture) and how they will mesh with the influences that we encounter throughout our lives.
