Thoughts on Teddy Cruz's TED talk
Density is not the problem and Architecture is NOT the solution. To solve an issue correctly it is best to go to the source of the problem. Current public, private, and economic policy is the source from which all problems and solutions arise from. Land use, particularly in a city is heavily regulated, making it nearly impossible to interject the opinions of the directly involved users. We see in the TED talk that a group teenage skaters was eventually able to create this public skate park they wanted on open land. Im sure there were many hoops to jump through, but in the end they were successful in manipulating policy, which allowed them (the direct users) to create a public space they all wanted. I urge architects, particularly ones who are involved with development in a city to put aside architectural solutions and fight to change policies involving development and land use. Until the right policies are in place, no building(s) will solve urban density.
I completely agree, I think we do overlook the real problems because we are so focused on building the "new" building. We have blinders on and only choose to see architecture as the solution when it is really only a band-aid solution.
ReplyDeleteI agree as well, but perhaps Peter is is a band-aid because we cannot as designers hope to fix everything. It is an overwhelming task to complete, and until people who are not designers embrace our ideas, the band-aid, it can possible hope to cover everything until others are on board.
ReplyDeleteI agree and also think that sometimes architecture is not the solution and we should give way to creating more open spaces for the public. A good example would be if historically we never made way for any public parks in cities those cities would be miserable places. In today's society we do a lot better at adding those spaces but is that enough or should we look to add more spaces in our ever growing cities.
