One Without the Other.....I think NOT!!
The idea of globalization and regionalism seem like polar opposites, but in reality you can’t have one without the other. Globalization of the planet has really opened up our eyes and has helped educate us about regionalism. Without our current technologies, it would really be difficult to understand other cultures or see images that can help us imagine what it would be like to be there ourselves. It makes it possible to understand a region's terrain or climate with ease. If the internet didn’t exists would we just become a group of uncultured Americans?
Globalization and regionalism really do work hand in hand; without each other it’s impossible to reach out and educate others about your region or your culture. Some say globalization is a bad thing, but there are more positives that come from it than not. Granted, without actually moving to that region we will never fully understand it, but it is the closest we can get.
I agree that globalization has shed light on issues and opportunities that we would never have learned about otherwise. For architects, the sharing of ideas and technologies is critical to the growth and success of the profession. It's interesting, though, that this palette of diverse culture has led to such homogeneous designs among famous architects. Maybe it's a way of making us all feel like one big happy earth family.. But probably not.
