Inspiration in a Sketch
I appreciate this idea of the architect/architecture being a
source of inspiration or stimulus. It’s kind of like the idea of the sketch. As
we wrestle with a problem, we eventually create a sketch that represents and
idea that will later be changed and molded. We as architects, can create a
project that has the same effect. It could create an idea that represents a
desire for more fairness or equality or efficiency or whatever. And that idea
will later me changed and molded into something else. It’s a step along the
process.
And if there is something that needs to be changed or
altered, the good news is that it is possible. There is a theory about
developing countries (that I will attempt to remember accurately). It suggests
that developing countries tend to advance faster than already developed
countries. Since a developing country doesn’t have all the old systems to work
around (above ground electric, train lines in cities, telephone booths) they
can actually proceed faster with new technology. There isn’t anything to stop
the progress. They can essentially skip steps that previously developed
countries struggle to take. Low tech example: a developing country will have citizens
who own camera phones and digital cameras, but they will have never seen a
film-based camera. Those citizens jumped through over 100 years of camera
technology in just a couple years.
Of course it all hinges on money. Everything hinges on
money.
But technology is the great equalizer. Especially cheap technology.
Just some inspiring sketches.
