Rural Studio is the Foundation

This week we had the opportunity to dive a little deeper into a topic that is well linked to the ideal of the Rural Studio. The Rural Studio has always been a project I enjoyed watching and studying about. I was able to visit the site of the studio in 2008 on a undergraduate field trip. It is one thing to see the studio in a book or images but to see it in person is eye opening and inspiring.

The theme of the collective readings deals with the principle idea of Social Equity and how architecture can effect change for those who can't necessarily change without aid. I feel very strongly about community service and the ideal we can all be a cause of change for our communities. From real life experiences, my extended college education, and lessons learned, change is possible in the areas and locals. I personally believe that architects have a duty to not only design the highly valued mansions on the mountain peak but for persons from every walk of life.

In Sam Mockbee's article he writes about the architects he witnessed whom felt it beyond them to be a force of change. He also cites that these individuals became too focused and forgot to see the larger picture around them. I really appreciate Mockbee calling for us as designers to be willing and remembering to take the step back to see the recognize the world around us.  It is easy to put on blinders and forget to take a look as we go through life. Reading Mockbee's article where he mentions it is a "moral sense" hits home.  I appreciate that he felt that architectural students would be catalyst for change. Mockbee foresaw that change had to start somewhere and he felt he could impact the next generation of designers. I feel his lessons and studio projects have impacted more than just the small town in Alabama. From my own appreciation of Sam Mockbee, I feel his legacy will help countless other students. I don't think one can change the notion of Social Equity overnight but I feel that Mockbee has opened the eyes of many designers with the Rural Studio and his career. I look forward to the part I will play as part of the generation that aids in the change.
