Looking at the Big Picture

“Junkspace thrives on design, but design dies in Junkspace.”

This quote by Koolhaus stood out to me because a lot of the time what makes good architecture is how the space functions, not just how it looks. Growing up you walk into these large scale shopping malls and are greeted with weird entrances that lead through various departments into grand highly developed central open spaces. Whenever you see images of these buildings, they are always interior images of the largest multilevel open spaces. The images you never see are of the actual department stores and shops. After being exposed to the world of architecture and going back to local malls it is very easy to tell where the emphasis and the money that went into the design was focused and what was really lacking. I’d much rather have a building that does all aspects of design well than have one that does something excellent and others poor or mediocre.
