The existential life is real and so are the consequences

Koolhaas writes, “Junkspace is postexistential; it makes you uncertain where you are, obscures where you go, undoes where you were.” Architecture no longer anchors you to the earth, but rips you from it, carelessly and without intention. Lack of attention to detail, movement, and logic leaves us with these spaces that are meaningless. Technology and consumerism have made building so quick and easy that there are no serious implications if you build a cheap, disposable space. Maybe the only way we can get back to existential architecture of the past–architecture that guides and grounds us–is if we are faced with the reality that materials are finite. There are existential choices that architects must make concerning how buildings operate in the world. There is no longer room chaos.
