Commitment Issues
Junkspace means lots of things, most of which still are not
clear to me. But I think within this idea of junkspace is the love for temporary
design. To be used for two years and then changed. A physical representation of
our fickleness. Exterior walls that are solid and load bearing allow the inside
to flow freely. New walls can be constructed and old ones torn down as we see
fit. When we want an open feel or a less open feel we can have it. And because of
this ability to be changed, it is a devalued space. There are endless
possibilities all with equal value so it is impossible to choose. The beauty is
that we can all share one space in unity and openness but it in reality it is a
lack of commitment. We are such multitaskers that we don’t create one building
for one use any longer.
Churches, as an example, were once these creations of beauty
and inspiration and are now open warehouse style venues that can be easily
transformed for other uses. Junkspace to me is anti-specificity. An inability
or unwillingness to say “this is for this use only.”
