Proactive manifesto
Both texts are the prophecy of our epoch, epoch of prevailing dominance by US spacial fashion.
There are only two conditions for me - rural and urban and they are in constant battle. Over the history they are getting closer to each other, morphing by deforming them selves. Then we are getting suburban, exurban, subrural, etc. are all conditions that are appearing in the gradient between nature and city - rural and urban. Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown were looking at shorter historical scope, talking about phenomena that appeared with the invention of automobile, soon it will be replaced. Rem has more holistic view, he is stating for our generation through pushing the idea of congestion. Congestion is successful, it stands for inevitable future density. In 2010s we reached critical point of population growth that shows our only option - Metropolis.
Nature vs. City
Rem Koolaas poses himself as an architect for the Meropolitan area, that I found very smart with his office named OMA, he erases the necessity for asking questions and arguing with him since he is so specific in his everyday Metropolis. He showed a way to stop the battle of nature and city by uniting them, it is becoming one of the "layers of Metropolis" - horizontal or vertical. "Nature as a service to culture of congestion", we tamed nature by trapping air in HVAC systems, planting in the flowerpots, tapping the water.
In 2010 during Venice Biennale OMA claimed that around 12 percent of the planet now falls under various regimes of natural and cultural preservation. They proposed to build on Unesco protected territories and all that is coming from Rem's earliest analysis of Manhattan conditions. Every city is about people, representation of desires and fantasies, it is a "natural" reality that has been depleted by density of human consumers. Today we have the same "inexaustable" cow in the dry milk, electric beaches in solarium and augmented reality in everyday like.
In June, 2016 Elon Musk stated that we live in simulation. Rem supported that in 1979 when wrote "Delirious New York" and I think we are successful in simulations of our needs, fantasies, realities by projecting them into cities even if it is a lobotomy.
