Fabrication of a False Reality

After reading and watching the video on the Retroactive Manifesto the idea of fabrication of reality keeps coming to mind. The way Coney Island was an vast experiment of creating experiences for the user. This Adult fun park endorses a sense of fabricating a new reality. The Congestion and density at which the city was growing was so immense they needed to created these experiences. Now these experiences and experiments were created in a way that seems from the outside user to lack authenticity. There is a sense of homage to what used to happen on the island. The simple activity of riding a horse has been transformed in to an automated mechanical system. This Steeplechase attraction is simple that even the plainest person can partake in.

Another example mentioned was the Downtown Athletic Club. In which the floor plates are repeated but different activities happen on each level creating their own unique spaces. This playground for the wealthy white bachelors also fabricates reality in a way that is particular to them The simple addition of an oyster bar in combination with a boxing arena creates a situation that is strange from the outside looking in but at the time was a delicacy. The relationship of interior and exterior spaces doesn't seem to exist. This is very much a core and shell application of architecture and interior design. The interiors are created to provide "natural" elements on multiple levels, with the swimming pool and the golf course fabricating experiences that are usually reserved for the exterior are now happening inside. These instances create what I see as a false reality. This reality is created from fabricated items that emulate the great outdoors or activities that are usually reserved for the outdoors. The density of New York at this time created problems but also posed a unique opportunity to think outside the box on what could be fabricated to increase the user's enjoyment.
