Replicating Organization
In the Blade Runner world, it seems a person could live an
entire life inside one building. The technology in that future has advanced so
far that the height of a single building could be infinite. The reading by
Koolhaas discusses how the invention of the elevator opened the possibility of
new ground. And with this new ground comes the ability to design and script
life. The requirements for a safe and secure higher ground involve a higher
level of control and organization. And perhaps as we become more organized in
how life is lived out, we lose the instances of chance and mistake. Chance and
mistakes are how we learn and innovate. Sure, not always how we learn or
innovate, but chances are we have created something new from an unintended
situation.
As we are more controlled and/or organized, perhaps we are
becoming closer to robots. Robots don’t make mistakes or do an action this is
unplanned. Maybe those replicants are our future.
I also had similar thoughts after re-watching Blade Runner and comparing it to the manifesto. At first, I was shocked because I kept pessimistically thinking are we just replicants designing for replicants?? As crazy as it sounds, I have always considered architecture to be more natural then some of the descriptions that I was reading in the manifesto. Perhaps because the idea of living and interacting solely in man-made objects seems far too unnatural. How far will we detour away from natural environments and when does it stop? Have we already gone too far and how and should we re-adjust to stop scripting and controlling everything in life?
