Facing Reality
" These “stories” describe a tradition of modernity that insists on
systematically exploiting all available apparatus and all the fresh infrastructures of the
age to establish fantasies as realities in the world. The cumulative effect of such scattered
episodes—and no doubt the cause of the anxieties they inspire—is that they
discredit the idea of Reality as an immutable and indestructible presence—of reality
as an ultimate safety net under our flawed acrobatic performances."
After reading the texts and seeing Blade runner for the first time, it made me think of a similar futuristic movie Minority Report with Tom Cruise. Like Blade runner, the story takes place in the future where crime is predicted before it happens, and the concept of reality is re-interpreted. In the movie, people have the ability to experience any reality of their choosing, whether it is winning a prestigious award or taking part in a special event in history.
The idea of fabricating reality is an interesting concept. However I think that being able to fabricate reality removes us further from reality. Being able to experience anything you want, in any space or realm has evolved over time. With advancements in technology, we have progressed further into a society where any reality is acceptable, regardless of how we experience it. Landscapes morph into rooms which turn into apps on our cellphones.
Eventually, the event or place we are fabricating will not be as attractive or evoke the same feelings as it once did. All of the these things will be commonplace in our society and none of them will seem to be real. I do not think we want to be in a world where everyone could say that they climbed the peaks of Mt. Everest or experienced the majestic movement of the Northern lights.
"The true ambition of the Metropolis is to create a world totally fabricated by man, i.e., to live inside fantasy." or outside of this so - called reality

Your comment about fabricating reality moves us further from reality is interesting. I somewhat agree with you, but to a degree. In the context of you talking about a movie like Bladerunner, projecting 30+ years into the future, that fabrication definitely puts us further from reality as we know it today. But when it comes to projecting only 2 years into the future, like we tend to do with a lot of our architectural renderings and money shots, those images really might bring us closer to the reality that will is coming, rather than push us away. Just some food for thought.
