Junk spaces/Non-places do not respond to complexity

"Space" is a word that is always mentioned among Architecture field. However, it is truly easy for us to create a junk space or non-place when we design a building. From the definition of junk space and non-place mentioned in Junk Space by Koolhaas and From Places to Non-places by Marc Auge.We can summarize that Junk Space and Non-places cannot be remembered. It sounds like these kinds of spaces are bad, and my comments on them will be justified in the following aspects.

From my perspective, they are generated from the desire of people. To be more precise, let us take airport as an example which is described as junk space and non-place. Before the first airport in the world was built, what the tourists need is a big, bright, comfortable, good organization of circulation airport. Those are the very very basic requirement. I would like to classify them as physical requirements. I also think the desire for enough food is also a physical requirement. Hence, in my view, junk space/non-place is a standard, that is, if the airport is built under this standard, the environment of the airport would be bad. Can you imagine the airport without environmental system or being organized confusedly? In conclusion, junk space/non-place is a kind of space only meets human's basic requirement.

However, we cannot ignore a fact that a starving people will seek for other stuff after having enough food. That is to say, people will have spiritual requirements when the physical needs are met. The spiritual requirements are related to culture, emotion, the personal habitat which are easy to create special memories. So I would like to say, it is time to design something which is beyond meeting basic requirement, we should take culture, emotion and may other complex condition into consideration when we design a building.
