WOW
Honestly, I cannot say that the architectures designed by Peter Eisenman are beautiful, however, they are powerful like we talked during the class.To be more specific, his architectures give me a strong feeling that there are thousands of ugly men performing ballet in front of me. That is to say, I may feel funny or disgusting if only one ugly man dances in front me. While the effect created by thousands of ugly men would shock me, giving me a WOW. I cannot find an adjective word for it, what I can say is that it is a strong feeling.
Before talking about the critical architecture, I would like to talk about some other thing, I think, which is related to creating the strong feeling mentioned above, that is, monument. The pyramid is a case for this topic. Obviously, its form is a pyramid and the floor plan is a simple square. But almost all of us are touched by it and a WOW comes out of our mouth. At the same time, I have to say, if there is a small pyramid standing on my desk, I would not have that strong feeling. So we can come to the conclusion that when a pure simple geometrical form becomes extremely big, it will leave a shaky feeling. After the pyramid, there are lots of architects try to reach the goal of the monument by this way.
Then let us come back to critical architectures. Those architects, like Peter Eisenman, focus on pure geometrical form without any reason or logic behind it. However, I still think what they do is different from the pyramid. The form created by them is more complicated, which still gives us a strong shocky feeling. From my perspective, the reason it can give us that kind of feeling is modern architecture with simple form and traditional architecture with complicated details fill our lives. Hence, when such a complicated architecture which is totally different from traditional one stand in front of us, WOW is perfect and proper word for us to respond to this condition.
In conclusion, in my opinion, there should not be too many objective architectures existing in the world. Because they are expensive and when people can see them everywhere, they will never shock us again. That is, the whole world spends much more money, but make objective architecture normal. I believe it is not worth it.
