Junkspace will be our tomb

This idea that junkspace is everything and anything is a strange stance on the state of our world. Is the world that terrible of a place that everything we create today is just attributing to our lack of intellectual development? The trend has become more ticky tacky boxes that lack presence and create a need for flexibility not necessarily longevity. Koolhaas writes about the idea of detailing

“Detailing once suggested the coming together, possibly forever, of disparate material, it is now a transient coupling, waiting to be undone, unscrewed, a temporary embrace with a high probability of separation; no longer the orchestrated encounter of difference but the abrupt end of a system, a stalemate”

In this detailing the basic idea of connecting two materials is still applicable but the factor of time is the variable. The abrupt end is a common factor. That is not to say the architect didn’t fully complete the design or the construction was not done. The bigger picture is what is missing. What is the need for another poorly crafted untimely structure that only increases our population’s need for consumerism. As architects we need to create more civic minded, big picture, how to help humanity as whole improve.

“Junkspace thrives on design, but design dies in Junkspace”

This quote stood out as I did the reading because it seems so absolute. Moving from the past of strong, structural, building masses to these lightweight removable systems could signify our lack of decision making. Are we as architects afraid of making a statement or mark that will last longer than our lifetime? Is fear the reason for all of these junkspaces that occupy our everyday life? I believe that architecture can influence people to think, and be better for the greater good. Maybe I am still living in a bubble of happy thoughts and desires to improve the world around, I just don’t think that everything created today is junkspace.
