Architecture as a Functional Technology

Now more than ever, architecture is needed to respond to the environment. Moshen Mostafavi’s notion of ecological urbanism puts the climate crisis as an opportunity for innovation. He calls for a shift from the conventional technology and move towards newer methods that are more appropriate for the earth’s current state of fragility. I actually think it would be advantageous to look back to more traditional technologies and innovate from these more natural precedents so that they are able to accommodate the needs of modern society and architecture. Methods like natural ventilation, water collection, thermal heat collection and dispersion in walls, are all successful strategies throughout history. This state of the world should shift architecture to a more functional and technological art as we work to find innovative solutions to slow the climate crisis.
