Spectacle of Domesticity

Suburban culture was presented as a sort of utopian ideal, though it encompasses underlying conflicts related to authenticity, loneliness, and alienation. The intentional clustering of standardized housing units within close proximity seeks to attain higher residential densities and promote a more lively community, however, this design approach blurs the distinction between individuality, conformity, and diversity (of people, programs, and architecture). I wonder what design-based alternatives will emerge to challenge and redefine the rigid, automobile-dependent suburban model. Instead of serving as an ‘artificial construction’ aimed at showcasing a ‘spectacle of domesticity,’ how can we retrofit suburbia to introduce new forms that prioritize authenticity, community, and inclusivity?
