Casitas

During this week’s lecture, the segment that briefly mentioned Puerto Rican casitas stood out to me. Last semester, they were introduced as well as a way of Puerto Rican immigrants to bring a little bit of home with them when they moved to the Bronx. It allowed them to gather how they previously would have done, both to socialize, and to teach their children their culture. Some children first thought that the adults were building clubhouses, and in a way they do actually seem quite similar in typology. It makes me wonder what other similar unofficial projects like this one have been done and what we can learn from them going forward.
