Is this the balance we are looking for?
Buildings have always been complex machinery and are become more so day by day. With the increasing focus on Sustainability, there are several ideas and experiments globally trying to address this issue of balancing technology and viability.
Metal that Breaths is one such example of a facade material study by Doris Kim Sung. She is presently an assistant professor at Columbia University and was previously a biologist. Her inspirations do stem from her unique educational background and her work involves using bi-metallic strips as shading and ventilation systems. The system depends on solar energy and the physical aspect of the material that allows it to shrink with heat and expand with cool. This system definitely deals with the challenges of facade systems being highly dependent on the electrical grids and provides an alternative long-term solution.
Although I am not fully convinced with the class discussion today of how technology can become architecture, I do think this project clears it out a little.
Btw, this Ted-Talk is really great!

I'm getting tired of Ted-Talks...when will Ted actually show up to the talk??
ReplyDeleteI've always been excited by the work of Doris Kim Sung and her for with thermo bi-metals. Although I have yet to see it fully implemented into a building, she is laying the groundwork, for the theory and working through the material technology where this solution can be implemented and hopefully well-integrated in the future.
ReplyDeleteAs architecture education moves forward, I hope to see more integration with other fields such as chemistry and biology to push material innovation. It's a fascinating topic that could have significant implications for our built environment.
