Smart House
When discussing sustainability and passive vs active systems, I couldn't help but think of all the new technologies that are basically creating "smart" homes. Does everyone remember the Disney Channel movie Smart Home? Basically this family wins this house that has a computer running it. It would clean the house for them (vacuums in the floor), give them any food they wanted on the spot, and could become the hip place for that high school party. I remember wanting this house so badly. But if you think about it these houses are starting to exist. Not so much in the automatic food prep or cleaning but there are systems out like Nest where you can control your house security or temperature from your phone. Back in the 90s I never would have thought this to be a true thing.
This is exactly what Martha Stewart was talking about in her conversation with Rem Koolhaas. I think it has a lot to do with not only technological advances, but advances in our culture and the structure of families. Now that more and more families have both spouses working, and are very busy it makes maintaining a household much more difficult. As Martha Stewart describes, you'll be able to use every minute of your time to multitask and say reading an email while you are brushing your teeth via a computer screen behind your bathroom mirror. I know glass companies are working on this and we will see it in the short-term.

ReplyDeleteBut also those creepy little Roomba vacuums that learn from your house and you can just let it go and it will make its way back to its home.
ReplyDeleteMaybe this is a slight change of topic but goes along with what Chelsea said- as I am starting my career I keep hearing from people that women can't have a successful career and have a family successfully. Something has to give and a lot of the time it's keeping up the house. So a smart house would be GREAT
