Studying New Ways to Design

"The past, the present, and the possible cannot be separated. What is being studied is a virtual object, which thought studies, which calls for new approaches." -Henri Lefebvre, 1968.

At first glance Philippe Rahm's work was way to theoretical for me: too many questions and not enough answers. However, I do think the process behind it intriguing, and find myself asking why we have never been challenged to think this way in school. We think about sustainability and know that to achieve certain sun exposures we should turn the building so many degrees or to get adequate ventilation we need an operable window on a specific facade, but the notion of designing the form based on air flow, feeling the warmth of the sun in winter, or finding cool shade in the summer seems so different. Its like beginning with a diagram of all of these invisible factors and then sculpting a building around them. Yes it would be a different type of studio, but I think the lessons learned from designing even one project that way could easily have effects on future work and what it means to create an experience through passive architecture.

  1. I am a little confused about this idea. I am not sure of why we are getting into the discussion of what comes first. We do design with the thought process of dealing with temperature and understanding passive design strategies within our built spaces, even if we don't necessarily present it as a design concept.
So, how are these two different?

  2. I feel like this design process could be great to determine comfort levels at different times of year but that seems old-fashioned. Like someone having a winter and summer bedroom.
