Suburbicon
It was an interesting discussion in class surrounding films and the persona of the Suburban lifestyle. A film I've seen recently, titled Suburbicon, focuses around this "perfect" life in the suburbs that was marketed through print media and commercials back in the 50s. The plot of the movie revolves around this suburban family who seems to have it all together from the outside of their home. However, inside the house, darker schemes are taking place. Matt Damon's character and his sister-in-law scheme to kill his wife, this leads to other cover ups and so on into a rabbit hole of lies and violence. None of the neighbors realize any of this is happening inside their "perfect" neighborhood. As we discussed with other films such as Revolutionary Road, the suburbs tended to be a persona that was marketed to families and the pressure on these families to meet that persona was not always evident from the exterior of their home. The suburbs became popular because of the commercialization of a new life in a new kind of place. I think recent films are doing a good job of depicting the truth behind this commercialization.
