Some thoughts about green roof
When we talk about sustainable design, it’s easy to say the green roof is an element of sustainable design. I agree that green roof has a lot of advantages, such as green roofs can reduce stormwater runoff; green roofs are energy efficient; green roofs can expand roof life 2x3 times and green roofs can provide up to 15 LEED credits.
But the reality is that green roofs often looks beautiful at first, however, it was almost dead after some time. It is because the growth of plants is a complicated matter, not just put the plants into the soil it will grow by itself.  In addition, the roof itself also has to perform the function of warm water drainage. Today's green roof systems often require high post-maintenance costs, both manual and money. For example, there is no shelter on the roof, and there is a high demand for irrigation in the summer. At the same time, the problem of waterproofing the roof and the problem of plant roots destroying the roof structure are also problems.
Therefore, a sustainable green roof requires the detailed design of the previous period, such as the type of plant, the design of the roof structure of the drainage design, etc. All of these must pay the design fee and take time. Because of the small amount of construction itself, the cost of one-time investment is also high.
For me personally, I would prefer to slow down the promotion of green roofs, because every new thing accepted by people needs to be tried constantly. If the green roofs designed cannot achieve good construction quality, or they can't be properly maintained. It will not only result in a waste of resources but also affect the user experience of the buildings.
