Local Experimentation

An interesting topic got brought up in class and that was the influence of building code on our ability to experiment with various facade systems, which for the sake of this blog, we'll say facade systems considered to be more sustainable in nature.  This idea leads me to also question what type of facade system might be considered more sustainable?  The high-tech glazing made in a factory half way across the country or the stone brought in from the quarry right in our own backyard?

When I think of sustainability I think of a building that is made with local materials and of course built to withstand the local climate.  I think if an architect truly understands the climate he or she is building for then the risk of experimentation shouldn't be that high.  By understanding the norm it is easier to deviate from it, especially if the experiment is using a new material that is still made fairly locally.
