Sustainable Architecture - the next / current big thing?
So many architecture firms and offices or individual architects are waving the the flags of "Sustainable Architecture", and so many books and articles are published on this topic, making people wonder if this is the next big thing in the field of architecture.
I think the clever answer is that it depends on the definition of "sustainable architecture".
If we are talking about LEED certificated building, net zero, and being "green", this answer is of course no. Don't get me wrong. I agree very much that these are good things to do, but architecture lose its own definition when these beneficial social factors become a design drive for designers.
If sustainable architecture means the spirit of using resources wisely and clearly. I would say no, it is not the next big thing, for it has been part of architecture since Roman times.
Sustainable Architecture become a big educational trap for many young architects, As I mentioned earlier, there are opportunities costs in designs, other design drive dies out when sustainable design becomes the major design drives. Sustainable design strategies are easy to copy and easy to sell. However, the idea of "copying" easily make the design out of the context, an un-sustainable deisgn in nature. Sustainable Architecture becomes the new International Architecture.
