Urban Suburbia

Suburbia is not that bad, for urban suburbia is even worse.

We should stop waste our time in talking about how to save suburbia, because each part has its role. Suburbia has its function just like how city has its function.

It is unhealthy condition when city stops function as city, and suburbia is taking urban condition's role, and that's the real reason why "suburb sprawls" are considered the evil, because they killed the city.

What is important is to maintain a healthy balance between suburbia, the urban and the rural.

However, a better threat to worry us is urban suburbia.

Namely, in an urban suburbia condition, people are living a suburb life within an urban context.

The decrease of activities (either active or passive) in social / public space, or decrease of social / public space itself in contemporary cities are the main cause. In these cities, density are high, but interactions are low.

Typical example of this "rural city" could be Atlanta, where you can find many high-rises and big mix-use buildings. However, it is particular strange to walk on the sidewalks in midtown Atlanta, for there are nobody walking in front of or behind you. Dependence on car, and its suburbia way of living for most residents explains this strange atmosphere in this city.

What make the situation worse is that Internet and smart phones are accelerating this condition to many other cities, even New York City.  With Uber, you would never walk, With Semaless, you would never go to a restaurant. With Tinder, you don't even need to go to clubs to pick up girls. Everything could be done in very lazy but efficient way, and ALL external interactions are avoided as much as possible.
