Bigness Bigness Bigness

“Like plutonium rods that, more or less immersed, dampen or promote nuclear reaction, Bigness regulates the intensifies of programmatic coexistence.”

I really enjoyed the reading on Bigness by Koolhaas. Growing up, I have always been fascinated with big buildings and how they functions. These buildings tower over you, hold thousands of people, have HVAC + electricity flowing through them, etc. It really is fascinating if you think about it. I’ve grown up near Downtown Atlanta, but I’ve also had the privilege of going to New York, Washington DC, Los Angelos, etc. Though all of these cities are vastly different, they all have large buildings. My mind immediately went to New York City when I read this. There are tons of high rise buildings there that have multiple different programs going on inside of them. Some of the buildings take up an entire block, so you really cant tell what’s going on in the whole of the building by looking at the facade. I got a little lost in part of the reading and could not tell if Koolhaas was degrading large buildings or not, but I for one have always been a fan of big architecture. I did appreciate the readings and the arguments that Koolhaas made as far as Bigness. Below I have included pictures of several “big architecture” buildings that I like.

ONE World Trade Center

Cayan Tower
