Impressions.
There's always a constant fight between Form and Function for driving design decisions for arguably good Architecture. We could observe many structures build-out of pride and mere enthusiasm to show their respective kingdoms' power. In contrast, some skyscrapers are purely functional. But both types create an impression of the era they were built.
The following google building would accommodate hundreds of employees but seems to be Function dominated. But the other proposed google office seemed to be balancing in between Form and Function. Both the buildings may function very effectively, but the second one slides a little more towards Form than the first one.
I believe that the artistic part of architecture gives designers the freedom to develop an expression rather than just an enclosure, which makes Architecture critical up to a certain level.
Google Office
I really liked what you said about "I believe that the artistic part of architecture gives designers the freedom to develop an expression rather than just an enclosure". I think form can really be something that makes or breaks the successfulness of a building.
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the comparison you have between the different google offices. I agree with you that the first is completely function. BUT I wonder if I would have said that 10 years ago? Will we think the same of the BIG google proposal in 10 years? Something to think about...
