Timelessness through Autonomy

    One cannot help but appreciate all of the different forms of contemporary architecture, specifically parametrics. It truly is remarkable how modern technology offers the capability to design complex buildings and structures through the manipulation of parametric equations. Conceived by Patrick Schumacher, parametrics recovers the notion of architectural autonomy originally articulated through the modern movement. This autonomous approach has led to many timeless creations. How exactly do parametrics play into timeless architecture depends on two key factors:

        1. Manifestation of simple shapes found in nature

        2. Harmonization with surrounding context

    To elaborate, firstly, parametrics can be used to create simple shapes through the repetition of complex patterns. A great example is the ride Spaceship Earth in Walt Disney World's Epcot, located in Central Florida. The attraction is a geodesic sphere constructed out of an intricate triangular pattern. Since the structure takes on a shape that is found all over nature, the building establishes a timeless atmosphere. One could look at this sphere in any time period and feel a sense of belonging.

One precedent that exemplifies this argument is the Fluor-Daniel statue, located on the campus of Clemson University. Though the statue has curvilinear elements, the repetition of straight lines complements those of the building's curtain wall, along with the brick and concrete layout of the sidewalk. This harmonization makes the paremetric structure feel as though it belongs where it is, thus strengthening its timeless atmosphere.
