Modernists studied the purest forms of space and organization by utilizing building technology (steel) usually found in very large buildings. It is undeniable that their use of steel and glass still influences architecture today. They only forgot one thing: unique people will be living in their buildings. That makes no sense to me. If you contract an architect to design a house, they better design a house custom tailored to your own needs, likes, and dislikes. Architecture like Alejandro Aravena's half houses make so much sense! He succeeds where modernism fell short. Aravena's half houses solved many problems; time to build was shortened, cost was minimized, material and building technique were locally available, but most importantly, Aravena designed a generic framework that people could fill out however they wanted. Not only did it give them a sense of ownership of their houses, but it instantly created a community of diverse buildings and building uses! Aravena's architecture makes sense because he did not forgot the user.
