Specialized vs Adaptable
The idea of designing for everyday life seems appealing and
a good idea since so much of our time is spend doing these “everyday”
activities. By doing so it can make users lives much easier making it a worthy notion. How can architects design for everyday life? It is this
complex set of problems that changes slightly for every user. Does design
happen for every individual or does it happen for a general idea and pattern of
what everyday life is. Whichever is chosen to design for it tends to create
more structured spaces in which only a few activities happen. However as great
as designing for everyday life is, there is the idea of these spaces being
designed in such a way that they are able to be used for special occurrences or
events that happen such as celebrations; weddings, graduations, birthdays, etc.
Though these don’t occur all the time it is good to have adaptable spaces in
which everyday life can occur but so can these special events. So how do we
decided what to do, design purely for everyday life or can design be done for
more as well.
