The endless problem of architectural design
"Too bad nobody wants to do a background building".
This statement reflects a real situation of architectural practice nowadays. The real life has showed that most of architects want to make their buildings standing out from the surrounding context. That is the ways "star architects" have defined for young generations who also want to reserve their impression during a short life of human kind. Actually I consider that it could be not their intention to make their designs unique or standing out. However during the design process it is unavoidable to put their personality or ego in the design, and making it different and unique.
Who would take the responsibility of designing the background buildings?
The meaning of architectural practice has significantly changed since the term "architect" was born. In the ancient societies the design of most buildings was belong to the normal people who had no knowledge about architecture. The design could be not excellent but they are the ones who clearly know what they want and need in their buildings. And naturally all of their design fitted with the context since they know what the society they are living in was.
Nowadays architect takes the responsibility of designing all buildings, from a small house to a large complex. Thanks to globalisation architects are enable to design the buildings in the foreign countries where they have a little knowledge of what kind of that society really is. The relation of building and user, for that reason, is unintentionally separated by the work of architects.
So the question is: "Could we turn back the architect's works to normal people?". I believe the answer is "impossible". Architectural design today is a complex process requiring a large amount of knowledge from different aspects that normal people are not able to hand out. It requires the contribution of many kind of professionals, from technology, art, business to social science. So we have to figure out the way to improve the direct relation between building and user without diminishing the role of architect. It is not easy.

With humans in today's society it is normal to want to stand out. A place has been created where one needs to stand out in order to succeed. It’s a notion that has been learned early on. However since architects directly affect people’s daily lives in either positive or negative ways does it make it more of a problem.
