Let's give the people what they want!

Aldo Van Eyck - Playground, form from function
Architecture school teaches its students to think outside the box. But in that analogy, the box is key. The school wants students to think about new forms, new shapes that could change architecture. But why, after modernism, with all the new building technologies available, do students not question the program? It is no longer new or interesting to create a building shaped like a double helix inside of a pyramid. However, that form would be interesting if it was arrived at naturally after defining and redesigning the program through user input and maybe even... peer review?
Architects have given themselves the stereotype of an aloof, egotistical asshole, and I can't help bu think it comes from their constant chase of the form instead of their pursuit of brilliant programming. Let's do better. Let's give the people what they want.
