The Danger of Everyday
There is a danger in objects that people interact with every
day. When you experienced something over and over, it becomes a part of you.
You begin to cultivate ideas about that thing. Your likes and dislikes or if it
works for you or doesn’t. If that button you use is always just out of reach,
you start to hate that button. And hate the person that put that button so far
away.
The things noticed at first seem to be the good and surprising
things. The things noticed after use seem to be the negative and inaccurate
things. It seems almost easier to create a building that is widely loved when
it is used sparsely. What is more difficult is to design and make something
that people will judge over and over based on their use of it. Especially
considering every person is different and their use is different.
Saying this is difficult has no bearing on whether it is
right or good. Just simply that it is difficult. I don’t know how to improve
the everyday or how to bring joy to the mundane tasks of life. Or does the
difficult or ugliness of everyday let us appreciate the joy of the unusual.
Perhaps elevating the everyday would decrease our joy or make it fake. When our
baseline increases, something else must fall.
