Contradictions
Starting off with '60's irreverence and '90's relevance, this idea of contradiction is something that I believe we all struggle with. Some more than others. I understand that everything goes through changes but the one I can't wrap my mind around is Rem Koolhaas. Who, in his earlier writings, roots for the unorganized chaos of the counter-culture, the contradictory programatic organization that came from the needs of the common folk. He praises their ingenuity for not conforming to the regulations set forth by the government and architects. Koolhaas to seeked to liberate architecture from itself, to destabilize and deconstruct the discipline’s will to order space and society. He sees these organizations as having failed the people.
Yet, fast forward 20-30 years and he's now creating buildings for those whom he heavily criticized earlier. He has said 'fuck context' which for me is the community which he praised earlier. And is now creating 'big buildings' for the big firms, big government and big money. These are the people who back in the 1800's and 1900's created organization in order to control the population. They organized towns built schools and stores to 'satisfy' the needs of their employees creating organization. He has come to the conclusion that in order to create destabilization, it is made possible when combined with the money and power of capitalists and big businesses.
