Where is Our Sidewalk?
A successful city district is that a person must feel personal safe and secure on the street among all these strangers. - Jane Jacobs
Sidewalks are the most thing I missed since I came to Clemson. I am a super fan of bicycle, scooter, and walking. I tried all of them from my home to downtown and only walking seems not too awkward. The largest issue for walking is that the road between houses and campus is too long and simple. Main part of the journey is accompanied with the fast cars or trucks, making me a turtle besides the shoal of fish and sometimes even sharks. The campus is the biggest island, the residential units are the second largest islands, and the road is the only current. I also understand that it is unnecessary for setting many destinations along the road, because the whole Clemson is a campus-based town. However, during fluid campus in Charleston, I still felt unsafe on the sidewalks. The problem there is that the sidewalks easily get broken or blogged by rainwater and some parts are missing “eyes” as Jacob said. The embarrassing situation is difficult to change as it may influence the layout of the city and in the other hand, an urban or suburban structure. And what make me reflect more is that I tend to become a fish- I am getting lazier to walk. It is influencing our lifestyles.
