Commentary on the Downfall of Western Society (this is a bit... kinda)

I think streaming services have really accelerated the downfall of western society. Mostly because people used to go to work on Monday, talk about work, then Monday night everybody would go home and watch Everybody Loves Raymond. We would sit around on a sofa, we watch the comic styles of Ray Romano, Patricia Heaton, that one tall guy, Peter Boyle, Doris Roberts, and then we would go to work or school the next day and go around the water cooler with those weird little paper cones and be like "did you see Everybody Loves Raymond last night?". It fostered a sense of community.

Now you go to work and fill up your own Hydroflask that you are probably still making payments on because its like $300, all while every one else waiting on you is is saying

"Please just one molecule of water I'm sooo thirsty"

"Sorry I have a ten liter Hydroflask watch this *glug glug glug*, by the way did you see the new episode of Physical 100 on Netflix?'

"no I'm saving it all to binge watch because I cancelled my subscription and when all the episodes come out I'll get a free trial then I'm gonna watch them all. So instead I was watching new episodes of How I Met Your Father on Disney+, have you seen that yet?"

"noooo I haven't seen How I met your father on Disney+ because I wasn't really that happy with how How I Met Your Mother ended when it was on NBC. Speaking of which have you seen Blockbuster on Peacock?"

"nooooooo I don't really wanna watch Blockbuster on Peacock because of the fact that Superstore didn't really mak-  but have you seen the Boys season 3 on amazon prime video yet?"

"nooooooooooo honestly I kinda stopped watching because we have a toddler and the episodes are a little violent to watch it, but have you been watchi- you NEED to watch the second half of the book of Boba Fett so that you can catch up to the Mandolorian"

"oh I didn't see the second season of the Mandolorian cause I've been too busy watching The Floor is Lava on Netflix. It's a really cool show and it reminds me a little bit of The Ultimate Beast Master, did you ever watch that?"

"noooooooooooooooooooooo because I was too busy watching reruns of Frasier on Country Music Television on demand"

We as a country can't get along anymore. You might think its because of politics, some might have you believe it's because of Architecture, but it started as soon as we made TV too convenient. It used to be you just watched what was on and you had no choice but to talk about that the next day. Now everyone is watching what they wanna watch and we can't have any conversations anymore. NONE. NO CONVERSATIONS. Every conversation is some vein of "have you watched this" "no have you watch this" "no have you watched this" then while your dying for some form of social connection you go to any social media to try and talk about your favorite show and it all says PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT THIS SHOW, the show runner was actually involved in 7 murders and 17 DUIs in Long Island in 1984. I CANT DO ANYTHING ANYMORE MAN. I JUST WANT TO WATCH KING OF QUEENS AND CONVERSE.

  1. Jake, it took me a few reads to understand how this went with the readings, but I think I'm getting your point. Experiencing similar things brings a community together and when you experience too many options, the feeling of isolation can become present. Paralysis from having this blank canvas for all users to design the exact way they want it will cause this sense of community you exemplify to dither away.
