Personalized Living

How do we design a modern way of community living amongst private residential spaces? The Moriyama House is one example of how the idea of public and private boundaries is blurred within residential architecture. Sanaa Architects created a home that combines simple and contemporary design with communal amenities. They created a modern house with a sense of community, as well as an open-plan living space and lounging. Sanaa architects followed their philosophy of “transparency and abstraction not as a means to a purely minimalist end, but rather as a blank canvas for a social call to action and personalization of space.” They allowed the residents who lived there to personalize the way in which they live privately but allowed them to interact with each other in the shared spaces.

  1. Good example Johnny. Spacial planning should be a skill that every architect should master, it is how architects design meaningful space for the users. Within the example, thinking about the relationship between buildings is important in the create meaningful spaces. Also, the use of simple design is not necessary a bad things it could also create new space within and around itself.

  2. I think this style of living is very unique and a great blend of public and private. Providing porches or open spaces such as these as a means of community is timeless. It kind of reminds me of William’s Terrace in Charleston in the sense that those porches were designed as an extension of the indoor space similar to this. The residents had ownership of their apartments but were able to socialize outdoor on the porches.
