“Junkspace can easily engulf a whole city. First, it escapes
from its containers – semantic orchids that needed hothouse protection emerging
with surprising robustness – then the outdoors itself is converted…”
Rem Koolhaas predicts the world we currently live
in with the rise of the internet. The internet has absorbed Junkspace. Instead of
Junkspace being a place that you visit, Junkspace has been brought directly to
our doorstep. Portable devices such as laptops and cell phones allow us to
carry Junkspace with us everywhere we go. Assuming we go anywhere. Streaming Services,
Social Media, Amazon, DoorDash, etc.... have made it possible to experience
Junkspace from the comfort of our homes. We no longer have to leave the house
for anything. We have become shut-ins. When the internet is down, cell phone
service is weak, or the power goes out; we panic. We panic because we live in
Junkspace. We are dependent on it. The physical world no longer exists. We only
have Junkspace to keep us comfort.
Jed, I never thought of the internet as Junkspace. This creates this idea of virtual spaces becoming the spaces we spend the most time in and thus in a way "inhabit". It made me think of VR and how it has the ability to create this virtual universe of our choice. Very interesting observations!
