Have you left place to appropriate space?

Henry Lefebvre's statement that For an individual or a group, to inhabit involves the appropriation of space was very interesting. We also discussed the idea of how appropriating space involves a certain amount of creativity. This goes with the idea that architecture is a frame that provides space for people to occupy in their own way. For example, the informal market in France was formed around the super rigid existing structure and shows us that there is this unplanned element of user occupation that can enrich the space. On the other end of the spectrum, we have architects like Richard Meier that wanted full control over how the users occupied the spaces he designed and got angry when it wasn't used the way he planned. As architects, though our job is to imagine and take into consideration how a space will be used and design accordingly, we have to make sure that we provide a certain amount of flexibility in design for people to really "inhabit" the space. This will help them really feel a sense of belonging and ownership. It will also enable the evolution of the space over time to adapt to the change in users
and needs. That being said, it is a fine balance because if something is left too open-ended, there is a high chance that it will not be used at all.

  1. Ruth,
I like how you said that Architects have to provide a certain amount of flexibility in design for people to really "inhabit" the space. I think that there has to be a sweet spot for designers, because while we may design a space with a specific intention, people will adapt the space to be used in whatever manner they need. It kind of reminds me of when specific circulation paths are designed for people to use in parks and then the public that comes to visit makes their own paths. At the end of the day, designs need to be flexible if you want them to stand the test of time because society evolves quickly and spaces aren't always able to evolve with it and get reconfigured.
