Redefining Living
Neumausus Housing in Nimes was Jean Nouvel's way of redefining the concept of residential living. This was done by providing a different and fresh take on traditional housing development breaking the uniformity and monotony associated with developments. Nouvel uniquely designed each unit with a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors. This creates a visually appealing and stimulating environment that engages the senses and captures imagination. The project prioritizes the needs of residents by creating a space that serves both function and aesthetics. Each communal space within the complex foster a great sense of community and connection among residents. Furthermore, they provide opportunities for socializing, relaxation, and enjoying of natural beauty. This focus on community and is a departure from traditional housing that often prioritizes individual living spaces over communal areas.
In addition to community, the project utilizes innovative materials and technology to create a sustainable and energy-efficient living environment. the use of glass in the buildings allow for natural light to flood communal spaces and reduce artificial lighting and the incorporating of green roofs/rainwater harvesting systems help to reduce water consumption and provide insulation against temperature fluctuations. The project revitalizes a once abandoned and neglected area and brings new life and energy. Creating a sense of shared ownership and pride in the development is very evident and a goal of the project. The project in all sets a new standard for modern living that is both sustainable and human-centric.
Maura, well said. This project also stood out to me when we talked about it in class. Its an interesting project and I appreciate what it does for its inhabitants and interesting sectional spaces but omg its ugly.
ReplyDeleteNemausus Housing is by far my favorite project we’ve seen in class. It may not be aesthetically pleasing to modern eyes. The program, especially the corridors that simulates a street life in each story is highly admiring and inspirational for all of the housing projects that are built these days. Any affordable project is limited with budget. Most projects do not care about the communal spaces in these projects and get rid of them to save money. Instead they spend a lot of their resources towards importing a material from the other side of the planet just to market their project. This project interestingly didn't have the need to market itself, therefore higher importance is given to these spaces instead of fancy materials and facades.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting project. It is amazing how much Nemausus housing accomplishes, such as these sustainable practices and technologies, but also what it does for its inhabitants.
