Architecture: The American Boulevard
Submission for 1/29
The concept of decorative sheds have lessened the visual interest of the American Boulevard. It has become subject to consumer culture, minimizing itself to quick, temporary,
steel construction with contemporary detailing and large signage. This has contributed to America’s lack of visible, architectural culture. Whether you’re on Tiger Blvd. or Tara Blvd. (Atlanta), the building typology remains. Logically, it makes sense to advertise businesses in close proximity to the road but fifty chains along a 2 mile stretch is excessive.
Moreover, in no way am I condoning the “duck” ideology, as it is far too literal. But in it’s defense, at least it has a sense of individual identity. I wonder if there’s a way we can enforce an architectural language amongst businesses that allow thems to express their identity in a meaningful and contextually conscious way?
