public voids
William H. Whyte once said, "It is difficult to design a space that will not attract people - what is remarkable is how often this has been accomplished."
Good design plays a crucial role in creating successful public spaces. A well-designed public space should be safe, comfortable, and functional. It should also take into account the needs and desires of the people who will be using it. In their article "Everyday Urbanism," John Chase and Margaret Crawford argue that urban design should focus on the everyday experiences of people in the city. They critique traditional approaches to urban design that prioritize the aesthetics of buildings and spaces over the needs and desires of the people who use them. Chase and Crawford believe that everyday urbanism can help to create more sustainable and equitable cities. By prioritizing the needs and desires of people over commercial interests or aesthetic concerns, urban designers can help to create public spaces that foster a sense of community and improve the quality of life for residents. They also ask you to think through the lense of varying ways people move through the space or arrive at it whether by walking, biking, driving, or riding a public transportation. Seeing through these lenses as a designer helps us to give as much priority to the bike rack as we do the local corner bakery to the new office building. This can help to prevent grass fields with concrete and create vibrant city parks and spaces.
